The extra money feels permanent, so spending begins to catch up.
Practical guidance for every stage of the FIFO journey
FIFO PAYS WELL.
BUT IS IT BUYING YOU FREEDOM?
Whether you’re considering FIFO, just starting or already on the roster, begin with the pathway that fits where you are now.
ONE FIFO TRAP BRAND · THREE USEFUL PATHWAYS
Where are you in your FIFO journey?
Choose the option that best describes you. We’ll take you to the questions and guidance that fit your stage.
The trap rarely arrives as a crisis.
It arrives one upgrade at a time.
A better car. A larger house. New toys. More repayments. None of them looks dangerous alone. Together, they can quietly turn a high income into a high-cost life that only FIFO can sustain.
Fixed costs grow until the roster is no longer optional.
You are earning more—but building less freedom than you expected.
Is FIFO building your freedom—or funding the trap?
Eight simple questions. No account, no email gate and no judgement. Your answers stay on this device.
Choose “I’m already working FIFO” to run this check.
This eight-question assessment is designed for people already earning FIFO income. If you are not yet in FIFO or are just starting, choose the dedicated Readiness or Foundations pathway above.
Choose your pathwayGive the next swing a job.
You do not need a perfect ten-year plan. You need one clear reason for the next pay before it arrives.
Name the reason
Be precise about what FIFO is meant to build for you—not just what it helps you buy today.
Protect the gap
Keep the difference between a normal income and FIFO income from disappearing into bigger commitments.
Give each swing a job
Decide in advance what this swing will move forward: debt, a buffer, a deposit, an asset or your exit fund.

I've seen the FIFO trap from both sides.
FIFO should build your future, not own it.
I'm Rob Brown. Before I ever worked in FIFO, I spent many years as a finance broker. I saw firsthand how high incomes could create real opportunity—but also how bigger loans, upgraded toys, debt and lifestyle commitments could quietly become golden handcuffs.
Now I see it from the inside. Since 2024, I've worked in FIFO passenger transport in Western Australia's Pilbara and now work as a FIFO supervisor. My wider background includes coach, school and public-passenger transport, along with UK transport management, driver training, team development and operational supervision.
Both perspectives have shown me the same thing: earning good money doesn't automatically create a better future. Without a clear plan, higher income can quickly become higher spending, bigger commitments and fewer choices.
I created The FIFO Trap to encourage honest conversations about using FIFO as a tool—building savings, assets and freedom rather than simply drifting from one pay cheque to the next.
I'm not a recruiter or financial adviser. I share practical lessons and personal perspectives from real FIFO experience. Views are my own, not my employer's.
